Key Role Description

Community Advocate

Builds awareness and support for the program by connecting with stakeholders, funders, and community influencers who champion entrepreneurship.

Community Advocate

Why This Role Matters

The Community Advocate is a trusted and visible champion for local entrepreneurship efforts. Whether part of a nonprofit, chamber, or grassroots initiative, this person helps spread the word, builds trust with entrepreneurs, and encourages people to engage with local programs and resources.

This role is especially important in communities where outreach capacity is limited or where relationship-building is key to participation. Community Advocates help bridge gaps, between programs and people, between organizers and overlooked audiences, ensuring more entrepreneurs know about and feel welcomed into the ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote Local Entrepreneur Support Programs
Actively share information about available programs, events, and opportunities for aspiring and current business owners.
  • Recruit and Encourage Participation
Connect with entrepreneurs directly, through word of mouth, personal networks, community events, or social media, to invite them to participate.
  • Serve as a Community-Facing Champion
Represent your organization or initiative in the community with enthusiasm and authenticity, helping to build trust and credibility.
  • Share Stories of Impact
Help gather and share stories that show how programs are supporting local businesses, and celebrate the success of participants to inspire others.
  • Advocate for Inclusion and Access
Help ensure promotion and outreach efforts reflect the diversity of the local community, reaching those who may not see themselves in traditional entrepreneurship spaces.

Ideal Qualifications

  • Well-connected within their neighborhood, cultural community, or industry circle
  • A clear communicator who enjoys engaging with others and building relationships
  • Passionate about small business, entrepreneurship, or community development
  • Familiar with or willing to learn about local entrepreneur support programs
  • Trusted by peers and seen as a natural connector or informal leader
  • May or may not have formal program experience — lived experience and passion matter most

Time Commitment

Flexible based on the Advocate’s availability and the needs of your organization. This role is often part-time, volunteer-based, or seasonal, depending on when programs are being promoted. Even a few hours a month can have a big impact when done intentionally.

Notes for Host Organizations

Community Advocates can be especially valuable in reaching underrepresented groups, first-time entrepreneurs, or hard-to-reach communities. They may promote programs through in-person conversations, local events, social media, or small business networks.

This is a great role for individuals who want to support entrepreneurship but may not have time to facilitate a program, yet still want to make a meaningful impact by helping more people connect to the resources available in their community.
