Key Role Description

Facilitator

Guides participants through the program content, creates a supportive learning environment, and encourages engagement and peer connection.

Facilitator

Why This Role Matters

The Facilitator is the heart of any entrepreneur support program. Rather than teaching or lecturing, this person guides group learning, creating a welcoming space where participants can explore ideas, learn from one another, and build confidence in their business journey.

Facilitators help entrepreneurs think critically, connect to local resources, and stay engaged throughout the program. They don't need to have all the answers, they just need to ask the right questions, listen actively, and help participants find their own path forward.

Key Responsibilities

  • Guide Group Sessions
Facilitate structured, weekly sessions where entrepreneurs work through content, share progress, and support one another.
  • Prepare for Each Session
Set aside time each week (at least one hour) to review the session materials, plan facilitation strategies, and coordinate with any co-facilitators or speakers.
  • Encourage Participation & Follow-Up
Remind participants of upcoming sessions, encourage survey or feedback completion, and check in on progress between sessions if needed.
  • Foster Peer Learning
Ask strong open-ended questions, encourage sharing, and create a space where participants feel safe being honest about challenges and ideas.
  • Connect Participants to Local Resources
Share relevant community connections, business tools, and support services that align with participant needs.
  • Offer One-on-One Support as Needed
Be available for occasional 1:1 check-ins or informal support, especially for participants who may need extra encouragement or guidance.

Ideal Qualifications

  • Experience as a business owner, entrepreneur, or someone who has worked closely with small businesses
  • Comfortable leading a group, but more focused on facilitating conversations than delivering lectures
  • Respected and well-connected in the community, or eager to build those connections
  • A natural encourager who listens well, asks thoughtful questions, and supports others’ growth
  • Passionate about helping people take steps toward launching or growing a business
  • Community-minded and inclusive in their approach

Time Commitment

Varies by program length. For a 10-week program, expect to commit approximately 50 hours total, including weekly session facilitation (usually 2.5–3 hours), prep time, and occasional one-on-one support.

Notes for Host Organizations

Facilitators do not need to be business experts or professional coaches. In fact, facilitators who approach the role as learners alongside the group, rather than as instructors, often create the most meaningful and empowering experiences. Lived experience, empathy, and strong group leadership matter more than credentials.

You may use different titles for this role in your community, such as Workshop Leader or Instructor, but the key is to have someone who can lead the group through the content, help participants think critically, and ask the right questions. Regardless of the title, the effectiveness of this person in creating engagement, fostering peer learning, and guiding discussion will determine the success of the program.
